Who will win the 2026 Copa Libertadores? Our analysis points to 4 contenders
The 2026 Copa Libertadores is in its final phase and four clubs stand out as favorites: Palmeiras, Flamengo, River Plate, and Boca Juniors. But as in every Libertadores, the South American knockout brings surprises — history shows the pre-tournament favorite wins only 30% of editions.
Palmeiras, with Abel Ferreira in charge since 2020, is our analysis's favorite with 18% chance. The São Paulo club has the most solid defense on the continent (0.8 goals conceded per game in 2025), a stable squad, and the "win knockout" culture that Abel built.
Flamengo comes right behind, with 16% chance. Has the most expensive squad in South America (valued at €280 million), powerful attack with Pedro and Arrascaeta, and the most passionate fans in Brazil. But Flamengo oscillates a lot — in 2024 they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Bolívar, in 2025 in the semifinals by Palmeiras.
River Plate and Boca Juniors represent Argentina. River has 12% chance, with Demichelis in charge and the experience of three titles under Gallardo. Boca's Bombonera, with 10% chance, is the most feared place in South America.
But beware: our conviction here is low. The Libertadores is known for surprises — in 2023, Fluminense won with 8% pre-tournament chance; in 2022, Flamengo won but needed a historic comeback in the final against Athletico-PR.
For bettors, the strategy in the Libertadores is not to bet on the pre-tournament favorite (which has negative historical ROI). It is to identify value in teams underestimated by the market. In 2024, Bolívar (Bolivia) was at 50.00 in pre-tournament odds but reached the quarterfinals.
Finally, an important note: bets on the Libertadores require extra care with injuries to key players. In knockout, losing a top scorer can transform a favorite into an outsider. Follow squad news before any bet — especially for games at altitude.

Frequently asked questions
Who is the favorite for the 2026 Libertadores?
Palmeiras, with 18% chance in our analysis. But confidence is low — the Libertadores has a history of upsets.
Why is your conviction low here?
South American knockout has variables that are hard to model: altitude, travel, home refereeing. In 2023, Fluminense won with 8% pre-tournament.
Is it worth betting on the favorite?
Historically no. The Libertadores pre-tournament favorite has negative ROI. Value is in underestimated teams (Bolívar in 2024 at 50.00 reached the quarterfinals).
